Guessing smartly

Battleship trains systematic thinking and reading coordinates. Instead of firing at random, fire in a checkerboard pattern: the smallest ship is two cells long, so every ship must touch a cell of the same colour. After a hit, try the cells above, below, left, and right until the ship sinks. The pass-the-phone screen keeps ship positions secret when two players share one device.
