Number Bases

Convert numbers between decimal, binary, octal, and hexadecimal. Flip individual bits and watch the value change.

Decimal, binary, octal, and hexadecimal

Computers store numbers as sequences of bits (0s and 1s). Binary (base 2) is the native form, while hexadecimal (base 16) and octal (base 8) are compact ways to write it: one hex digit stands for 4 bits, one octal digit for 3 bits. Type in any field, or click a bit to toggle it. The signed value uses two's complement, the way computers store negative numbers.
